What is a Partial Refund?

Introduction

A partial refund is when you return only part of the original transaction amount to the customer instead of the full amount.

How It Works

  • The original payment stays in place, but you send back a portion of it.
  • Processed through your payment gateway/processor just like a normal refund, but with a smaller amount entered.
  • The customer sees the refund amount credited back to their card or account — typically within 3–7 business days.

When You’d Use a Partial Refund

  • Customer keeps part of the order
Example: They ordered 3 items but return 1, so you refund the cost of that item only.
  • Service partially delivered
Example: Event ticket where part of the event was cancelled.
  • Goodwill adjustment
Example: You give $20 back as a courtesy for a delayed shipment, without refunding the full purchase.

Things to Note

  • If your processing fees are non-refundable, you still pay the full fee on the original transaction.
  • For recurring payments, you can partially refund a single billing cycle without cancelling the subscription.
  • Multiple partial refunds are possible, as long as the total refunded amount doesn’t exceed the original transaction.
